MaxDB has now been made available for Linux on PowerPC 64-bit platforms. The new platform brings good benefits to customers who want to run SAP or other applications on MaxDB in a Linux environment.
The Linux on PowerPC platform is available for servers from the IBM eServer® iSeries, pSeries®, BladeCenter and OpenPower server families. Common features across families include mainframe-inspired reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS), and binary compatibility. You can mix and match Linux on PowerPC servers to implement the combination that best meets your solution infrastructure requirements. As Linux on PowerPC supports a wide range of systems, the target market for this platform is both the SMB and the Enterprise market.
IT-Informatik GmbH, in Ulm Germany, provides data-center consulting and services to its customers. Due to performance bottlenecks in one of their customer's SAP R/3 Enterprise system with 300GB data and around 500 users, IT-Informatik chose to evaluate what benefits could be realized by a transfer to MaxDB 7.5 on Linux on PowerPC. In its proof of concept study, IBM Böblingen together with IT-Informatik proved that the SAP solution based on MaxDB 7.5 and Novell SUSE LES 9, running on IBM p5 550 with PowerPC, performed significantly better than the customer's existing Microsoft® Windows® cluster-based computing environment.
