Ghent, Belgium -– March 6, 2009 –- Netlog, one of the fastest-growing Web communities in Europe, today announced that it has purchased a MySQL Enterprise(TM) Unlimited subscription from Sun Microsystems to help ensure its database infrastructure will scale to handle its 300-percent traffic increase last year.
Netlog is one of the fastest-growing social networks in Europe. The target group is young people, 14-24 years of age, and Netlog is primarily used for communication, entertainment and sharing music and photos.
Access to MySQL Enterprise's monitoring and support services will help Netlog deliver excellent performance, security and response times on its 300 database servers. The company has 40 million registered members generating more than 6 billion page views every month.
"Every hour, Netlog's MySQL databases manage millions of queries -- and the traffic on our 1,000 application and Web servers in Europe is extremely heavy," says Toon Coppens, CTO and co-founder of Netlog. "In spite of this, our response times are very short, which is absolutely critical for a Web-based business such as Netlog. We also have a young audience with high demands on speed and functionality. This is achieved through an IT infrastructure based on MySQL Enterprise, which provides high performance, reliability and high availability to all our systems."
The MySQL Enterprise Unlimited subscription provides Netlog with access to around-the-clock technical support, an unlimited number of monitoring services, and the ability to scale out to an unlimited number of MySQL Enterprise servers. One of the monitoring tools that Netlog benefits from is the new MySQL Query Analyzer, which helps improve application performance by monitoring query performance and accurately pinpointing problem with SQL code that may be causing a slow down.
Netlog's in-house development of 'sharding' system based on MySQL(TM) databases is one of the secrets behind its high performance and ability to serve millions of users. The systems' huge amount of data is shared between the servers, meaning that any lost information is kept track of, even if a server temporarily shuts down. In this way, the heavy traffic on Netlog is more evenly-distributed, so it is easier to scale out the system, allowing Netlog to add even more members without affecting performance.
"MySQL Enterprise Unlimited provides a fixed cost solution with no surprises, regardless of how many servers are deployed," said Magnus Stenberg, Sun Microsystems' MySQL sales manager for Nordics & Benelux. "It is extremely well suited for fast-growing companies such as Netlog and all organizations looking to reduce IT costs across all departments."
Netlog is an online community site where users can keep in touch with and extend their social network. It is an online social portal, specifically targeted at the European youth. It is developed by Netlog NV, based in Ghent, Belgium. Netlog is currently available in 25 languages and has more than 40 million members throughout Europe, and this number increases every day. www.netlog.com.
