London –- 12 February 2008 -– MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that UK-based WYSdom Dental Technologies has embedded the MYSQL database into its flagship practice management product, ICONic. The ICONic system provides a one-stop-shop solution to address the complex requirements that dental practitioners face with regards to client and back-end administration systems, as well as external communication with the Dental Practice Board.
WYSdom needed to migrate from its proprietary database to a modern database solution that could provide the functionality that the software vendor's current and future customers were asking for. It also needed to meet regulatory requirements to integrate with the Dental Practice Board's system for NHS patients' fee recovery. The Dental Practice Board system is migrating to a Web-based EDI technology, which the previous ICONic application could not support.
"MySQL is a robust database which has a proven track record in driving modern applications," said Laurie Trewinnard, CEO of WYSdom Dental Technologies. "We decided to embed MySQL because it is capable of growing with our business and evolving with our new system. It is also well understood and supported within the developer’s world, and has the benefit of working with Linux and other platforms, if required -- which was particularly appealing to us."
WYSdom Dental Technologies was one of the UK's first software companies in the field of dental practice systems. The company was one of the earliest dental system suppliers to be certified for the English/Welsh EDI transmission in 1991, and later pioneered EDI transmission within Scotland in 1993. Its ICONic system provides a simple-to-use yet full-featured dental system -- enabling practitioners and hygienists to customise system preferences, whilst delivering efficient and fast treatment planning and recording.
The ICONic system, featuring the MySQL Embedded Server, went into pilot sites in England in September 2007, and in Scotland in January 2008. The system is now being rolled out to the general customer base as a full new software upgrade.
MySQL AB's expertise lies in helping users to cost-effectively manage explosive growth in their businesses through innovative database products and commercial services based on proven best practices. The company’s database server is a recognized platform of choice for a modern "Scale Out" application architecture -- replicating multiple database servers on low-cost commodity hardware -- as opposed to the traditional "Scale Up" approach of replacing systems with larger, more complex, and more expensive infrastructure.
MySQL AB develops and supports a family of high-performance, affordable database products. The company’s flagship offering is 'MySQL Enterprise', a comprehensive set of production-tested software, proactive monitoring tools, and premium support services.
MySQL is the world's most popular open source database software. Many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations use MySQL to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, business-critical systems and packaged software -- including industry leaders such as Yahoo!, Alcatel-Lucent, Google, Nokia, YouTube and Booking.com.
With headquarters in the United States and Sweden -- and operations around the world -- MySQL AB supports both open source values and corporate customers' needs. For more information about MySQL, please visit www.mysql.com.
