Gianola Broadens Executive Team in MySQL's New Silicon Valley Office
CUPERTINO, Calif. - MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that Maurizio Gianola has joined the MySQL AB management team as vice president of Software Engineering. Gianola oversees the development of all MySQL AB products, including the MySQL®, MySQL Cluster and MaxDB database servers, as well as MySQL's database administration and connectivity software. Gianola works from MySQL's new Silicon Valley office in Cupertino, Calif.
Gianola brings to MySQL more than 20 years of experience in managing enterprise software engineering. Prior to joining the company, he held executive engineering management positions at PeopleSoft, Annuncio Software, Extensity and Plexus Software. He has been involved in database research and development since the technology's early days and has done pioneering work in RDBMS technology applied to document imaging and workflow.
Maurizio has the strong management and database expertise to lead MySQL product development at time of unprecedented growth for the company, and we are honoured to have him join our management team, said Mårten Mickos, MySQL AB CEO. The MySQL database is evolving quickly to meet the needs of corporate enterprises and specific vertical markets, and Maurizio's strategic direction will ensure that we meet our engineering and company goals.
I have the rare opportunity at MySQL to work with some of the world's foremost database and open source experts, both within MySQL AB and in the active MySQL open source community, said Gianola. MySQL is redefining the software industry - bringing back into focus software quality and value as essential criteria for technology. My goal is to continue to enhance MySQL's enterprise capabilities and market reach, while maintaining a strong commitment to its core strengths in performance, reliability, ease-of-use and value.
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports a family of high performance, affordable database servers and tools. The company's flagship product is MySQL, the world's most popular open source database, with more than five million active installations. Many of the world's largest organizations, including Yahoo!, Sabre Holdings, Cox Communications, The Associated Press and NASA, are realizing significant cost savings by using MySQL to power Web sites, business-critical enterprise applications and packaged software. MySQL AB is a second generation open source company, with dual licensing that supports both open source values and corporate customers' needs in a profitable, sustainable business.
